Out for Cigarettes
A vignette
In the months - nearly a year! - that I’ve been publishing Every Other Sunday, I have shared twenty original poems, in a variety of styles and forms. In these poems I’ve explored images and ideas, using devices and structures drawn from traditions that inspire me, ranging from the strict syllabics of the Burmese Ya-Du (Dance, March 10) to the rhythm and flow of modern songwriting (Blue Shoes, July 28).
Today’s poem, the twenty-first, is in the spirit of a vignette, being a short narrative summary of observations that, together, provide an image of… well, you decide.
Out for Cigarettes
A woman screams.
A baby cries. Someone laughs.
He considers the scene.
It doesn’t fit his narrative.
He goes out for a smoke.Thank you for reading Every Other Sunday. Have you subscribed? Please do, and if you know someone who might enjoy EOS, please share. Comments are welcomed - tell me what you think.
